In United States, and for a few years all over the world, the expression 4/20 returns as a leitmotif among cannabis users, sometimes used to describe themselves on dating apps, sometimes promoted as a real celebration of cons -culture. Explain what "four-twenty" really means.


First, we have the phenomenon 4/20, pronounced "four-twenty", in the United States. Several expressions allow to speak about it, like 4:20 or 4/20. 4:20 refers to the time, 4:20 pm in French, which is said to be the best time to smoke a joint, or the best excuse. The myth says that in 1971, a group of Californian teenagers, known as the "Waldos", met after school around 4:20 pm to share a joint. "Four-twenty" was later popularized by the rock group Grateful Dead, one of whose "Waldos" had affinities with a member of the group.

A whole tradition was born since the 70s, around 4:20 and this symbolic meeting for stoners, cannabis users. So much so that the numbers 4 and 20 have been reworked to form the date of April 20 (4/20 in English), the world day of celebration of cannabis and the counterculture. On April 20, several protests took place in the United States, and today around the world.
